Intimate video of Mel Maia and leader of Comando Vermelho is deepfake

by

Actress Mel Maia, 20, was the target of profiles that spread posts with a fake intimate video, taking her name to the most commented topics on the X platform last week.

The recording, which allegedly showed the artist performing oral sex on a man, was a deepfake, although many online users believed it. The false captions said the man was William Guedes Sousa. Named as one of the main men of Comando Vermelho, he was arrested on July 3, the day Mel Maia’s name was involved in the disinformation.

In addition to detecting details characteristic of the use of artificial intelligence just by zooming in on the video —such as the neck cut out and pasted onto the lap—, the Sheet contacted two forensic experts.

According to Mauricio de Cunto, it is possible to list several fraudulent manipulations in the post. “There are differences in the speed between the frames of the video, even in a short section, which causes an unnatural movement of the character’s eyes,” he said. According to him, it is difficult to see details of the face that could provide clear biometric elements.

Researcher Mario Gazziro, from UFABC (Federal University of ABC), suggests the use of face-swapping applications, “the same ones used to train and fit the faces of Hollywood actresses into pornographic films of other women.”

Mel Maia also denied the veracity of the content. She stated on Instagram: “Everyone insists on saying it’s real, but everyone knows it’s artificial intelligence. Guys, do you think I would, in my right mind, let someone make a video of me like that? Just asking you here.” In the recording, she mentioned other occasions when she was the target of misinformation, including cases of nudity and aggression.

Although the video is fake, it is worth remembering that sharing intimate images of a person without consent is a crime. As Sheet has already shown, the law also criminalizes the production and dissemination of montages and manipulated images of a sexual nature — the penalty varies from six months to one year in prison, in addition to a fine.
