SKAI 100.3’s series of radio documentaries on European history.
In the documentary series, “Knowing European history: 19th century. Humanity in the modern era”, presented by Aris Portosalte, is dedicated to the 19th century.
How were political balances shaped in Europe during the 19th century? How have technological innovations affected economic and social developments? How was the diplomatic system established after the Napoleonic Wars and how did it function until the eve of World War I? What were the interests of the Great Powers and how did their rivalries develop?
Professors Thanos Veremis and Antonis Klapsis discuss with Aris Portosalte about the old continent during the years of the first and second industrial revolutions that introduced humanity to the modern era.
In the broadcast of Sunday July 21, the discussion started with the wider region of Northern Italy and more specifically with South Tyrol and Strasbourg. The speakers of the broadcast, professors Mr. Klapsis and Mr. Veremis together with Ari Portosalte, analyzed the how the 2 regions, South Tyrol and Strasbourg, developed into 2 important economic regions with very high growth and how we lead to this economic growth when any nationalist conflicts are smoothed out.
In more detail they stated that Northern Italy was a region of Europe with local and tourist industry with main roads connecting the Adriatic with central Europe, it was a transit trade center and the people living in these areas coexisted peacefully and developed economically.
In addition, Strasbourg was chosen to be the headquarters of the services of the united Europe and Mr. Veremis with Mr. Klapsi and Aris Portosalte focused on the idea of European integration which, as implemented from the 50s onwards, was based on a triptych :
• Financial well-being
• The democracy
• Peace
These institutions had to co-exist in order for the tree of European integration to grow, because they are three links that fit into each other and complement each other.
Finally, the speakers of the show analyzed that through economic cooperation the vehicle of European integration began to move forward as the first communities were of an economic nature and it took many decades to reach the current part of the European Union.
Don’t miss the next broadcast of the new series of historical radio documentary “Knowing European History: The Awakening of the Greeks” on SKAI 100.3, Sunday 28 July at 9am.
