Sigourney Weaver will make her London West End stage debut as the tempest-making wizard Prospero in The Tempest in a new production by The Jamie Lloyd Company, directed by Jamie Lloyd.

THE Weaverstar of Ridley Scott’s “Alien” films and James Cameron’s “Avatar” film series, last starred in one of the English playwright’s plays when she played Portia in a 1986 off-Broadway revival of “The Merchant of Venice ” (The Merchant of Venice).

“Sigourney knows Shakespeare, she knows theater and I’m absolutely thrilled that she’s agreed to play this role.” the theater director told Deadline.

Lloyd had an inspiration overnight that Sigourney Weaver would play Prospero, emailed her agent, who said she was unlikely to be interested in the role, but the actress herself responded the next day showing interest.

“Read the play, especially from the perspective of a woman playing Prospero. And that really excited her and made sense and illuminated the work in new ways.” Lloyd said.

The director mentioned watching Weaver’s performances “in all these iconic movies – Ghostbusters, Gorillas in the Mist, Working Girl, all of them.”

He pointed out that he has seen “Alien” more times than any other movie. “And I just thought, ‘How amazing would it be to work with someone you’ve admired since you were a kid? And bring her to London,'” he added.

The play will premiere in February 2025 at the Theater Royal Drury Lane, which was built in 1763 and became a popular stage for Shakespeare’s plays.
