Where were you in July 2011? Earlier that month, Daniel Radcliffe was attending the premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” in London. The marathon of previews for the latest film in the franchise marked the end of his starring role in the film version of JK Rowling’s saga, which spanned eight films over the course of ten years. In the last film, the actor who played the young wizard went to work drunk on several occasions.
“I never drank on set, but I would arrive drunk. There are many scenes where I feel like I’m out of my mind,” Daniel said in an interview with BBC radio. The actor, now 35, said that uncertainty about his professional future led him to drink.
One of the difficulties he said he faced was the uncomfortable feeling of always being watched. “The quickest way to forget that people were watching me was to get drunk. But of course, when you’re really drunk, you think, ‘Oh, now people are staring at me because I’m really drunk, so maybe I should drink more to ignore them. ‘”
“It was a way of not facing the future, of how I was going to deal with my life after Harry Potter. I felt panicked about what my next step would be. I had problems with alcohol, especially during my late teens when I started going out at night,” he revealed.
