The emeritus professor of Political Philosophy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Mr. Periklis Vallianos talks with Aris Portosalte about the old continent in the years of the first and second industrial revolutions that introduced humanity to the modern era and about the awakening of the Greeks.

In the broadcast of Sunday, August 4, Mr. Vallianos with Aris Portosalte started their discussion with the aftermath of the French revolution, where France had social tensions within the country after the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte at Waterloo in 1815 and they analyze the 2 phase of the Industrial Revolution as a continuation of the previous broadcast on Sunday 28 July.

The 2nd Industrial revolution continues in Britain but now also involves new countries such as Germany and the United States of America where we have an “explosion” in the industrial life of the country as the industrial production of the USA is greater than that of Britain.

As Professor Vallianos and Aris Portosalte explain to us, the main characteristics of the 2nd Industrial Revolution were the following:

  • The technological revolution in chemicals, where the Germans take the lead.
  • Electricity with the electrification of cities and industrial production.
  • The discovery of the internal combustion engine which led to the invention of the automobile.

The 2nd industrial revolution, at that time, was the “acceleration of everything” where technology advanced at a very fast pace and beyond the above main features it also led to the acceleration of telecommunications through the telegraph.
