‘We all lost’, says Taís Araujo after accusations of sexual harassment against Silvio Almeida

by

The couple Taís Araujo and Lázaro Ramos spoke out about accusations of sexual harassment against Silvio Almeida, former Minister of Human Rights in the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

On social media, the actors lamented the news and stated that the entire society loses. “When a woman suffers violence, everyone suffers. But when it happens to our community in the way it has in the last 24 hours, it is a punch in the soul,” stated Taís.

The artist also offered her condolences to Anielle Franco, the Minister of Racial Equality who was allegedly harassed by Silvio. In the message, she stated that the allegations are disappointing for women and for the fight against racism.

“What we need in this scenario is justice and strict punishment. I don’t want to see the setback of such a long, cruel, tiring but also victorious fight. It is a difficult defeat to digest.”

Ramos defined the accusations as a devastating chapter in the anti-racist and women’s struggles. The actor stated that, as a black man, he questioned himself about how to act, to defend what needs to be defended and not reinforce what the system already does to black people.

“Beyond this unrestricted support for women, I don’t have a ready answer. The only certainty I have is that today, regardless of the outcome, an entire community is moving backwards.”

On Friday night (6), Almeida was fired by the president. In a statement, the Presidency’s Social Communication Secretariat said that the allegations were serious and that Lula considered the minister’s permanence unsustainable.
