Denis Villeneuve has officially confirmed that the third film ‘Dune’ will be the last in the film series.

Although the “Dune 3” film project will complete a trilogy of films in this universe, Villeneuve has also made it clear that it is not a trilogy.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the French-Canadian director said: “It’s important that people understand that for me it was really a diptych. It was actually two movies that are adaptations of the first book. That’s done and it’s over.”

“If I do a third, which is in the process of being scripted, it won’t be like a trilogy. It’s strange to say this, but if I go back there, it will be to do something that I think is different and has its own identity,” he explained.

The third film, expected to be titled “Dune: Messiah” is planned to take place 12 years after the events of the first “Dune” novel, which means the cast should be older.

Of this particular assignment the director said, “That’s my problem. I know how to do that.”

Villeneuve has hinted that he wants to leave the “Dune” franchise, but that doesn’t mean he wants the story to end. “I’m not closing the door. I won’t do it alone, it could happen with someone else,” said the director.
