About her path in the field, the rejections, the retsinia she struggled to get over herself and her own theater that is being prepared and to which she will give the name of the woman who helped her stand on her feet, spoke Anna Fonsou.

In an interview she gave to Espresso newspaper and Nikos Nikoliza, the beloved actress was particularly revealing.

“I think the theater will be ready in January. This building has many interesting pieces. It has a small theater inside for young artists to perform and will be called “Kyria Katerina”. Unfortunately, half the theaters in the free market are owned by one businessman and the other half by another. On the other hand, the national team has divided the positions, so no young person can play”, Anna Fonsou initially said about her dream coming true.

-A lot of money passed through your hands and you threw most of it into the Actor’s House and building theaters. Didn’t you think that you could have eaten this money in the good life?

“I, as you know, was a very poor girl. My father was exiled for many years and, when he returned to Tinos, you did various jobs for us to live. I had a small donkey and I used to go all over the island with various herbs, fruits and later with the same donkey I went to Varvakeio, in Athens, fruits from Tinos.

Then, when Mrs. Katerina met me, she studied me and helped me a lot to get back on my feet. When I married one of the richest Greeks, my first husband, he would tell me what I wanted him to buy me. “A house in Athens, a house in New York…”, he would say to me and I would tell him: no, I will stage this play in such and such a theater. I used to throw everything there. I was busy with the theater and now with the Actor’s House.”
I don’t care about my reputation at all, and that’s why you don’t see my name written anywhere in the buildings I make.”

– Why haven’t you played at the National Theater?

“Every year I go and apply and every year they say, ‘We have your last year’s application. Have you done anything else to supplement? Unfortunately, we are closed for this year.” Out of all the managers of Ethnikos, only one called me over the years to play. Dimitris Lignadis. Unfortunately, while we had found everything, his case broke and everything was frozen.”

-Did you believe in the innocence of Lignadis from the beginning?

“I don’t know Dimitris in his personal life and I’m not interested. Just like I don’t care about anyone else’s personal life either. We were in the children’s entrance exams many years together. I know a man deeply educated, who does not lift a fly on his sword when it comes to his work. After all, that’s why the courts exist, to make the right decisions. I did 25 years to get rid of the “smudge” with the sensual films. Gisela Daly died in this misery.’

-For both you and Gisela in the 70s there are some movies with sensual scenes…

“We never shot those scenes. That’s why for 20 years I ran to the courts and in the end I was vindicated. We never shot these scenes ourselves. In the films that we shot at that time (which was also a dictatorship) and Gisela and I, the producer was obliged to give the script and have it read by the people of the Papadopoulos government. It was being censored, in short.

For the film “The Girl and the Horse” that I made with Yannis Argyris, which was at the National Theater, the script went through the professors of the National Theater. Like a movie we did with Barkoulis, called “Warmer than the sun”, where we had a scene with Andreas hugging me.

We didn’t know that these movies are sent abroad and they put other scenes in addition. In fact, in this film they put a fat woman to show her body with rather large breasts. I couldn’t wait to see this movie.

And all that I experienced is a very great bitterness that I have. I didn’t do love scenes in those movies. Just naked and that’s it. You know, it took me many years to get over it and solidify that I’m not who they show in the movie. And when I held trials, the whole crew that we were filming came as my witness. And that’s why they withdrew.”

– Gisela Daly?

“We had said at the time that she should also turn to the law, but due to costs she could not and did not proceed. He had teased her too much, because Gisela didn’t do a single nude scene. And he died in this misery”
