The story of the Greeks is not only about the Greeks, it is a story for the world. Roderick Beaton, the leading English historian, professor of Modern Greek and Byzantine History, Language and Literature at King’s College London, tells Aris Portosalte the history of the Greeks.

In the show of Sunday, September 1, Aris Portosalte with guest Mr. Roderick Beaton, discuss the Greek language, Hellenism and education during the period of the 19th century, as some decades after the liberation struggle, two leading historians give a meaning to what we say Greek identity. Konstantinos Paparrigopoulos and Spyridon Zampelios expressed the opinion that modern Greece is a continuation of Ancient Greece but also of Byzantium, while the Greek language is the Myth of Ariadne that connects generations of people for 3,500 years.

In addition, Aris Portosalte and Mr. Beaton on the show discussed the invention of the alphabet thanks to which the written word became accessible to all people. Then we have the important role of the Greek-speaking man in history who lives in the Eastern Mediterranean, a resourceful man according to the description of Homer and a skilled merchant who, by creating trade relations, creates and spreads the Greek Culture. A few centuries after the discovery of the alphabet, the first Greek diaspora took place and the first colonies were built on the shores of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, establishing the city-states.
