His daughter R. KellyJoan, talks about her father, who was found guilty in 2021 of sex trafficking, child sexual exploitation and extortion in a new documentary.
The feature-length documentary features interviews with Joan and her siblings Jaa Kelly and Robert Kelly Jr. as well as their mother Drea Kelly, who was married to the singer from 1996 to 2009. They all talk about the “dark reality of you live in the shadow of one of the most notorious forms of music.”
“No one wants to be the child of the father who is out here hurting women and children” Joan says in the film’s trailer. “He knows exactly why we can’t have the relationship we’d like to have with him” she says, adding tearfully: “She was everything to me.”
The film’s official synopsis states that in the film, Joan will share “a heartbreaking secret that shattered her childhood and changed her forever”. “For a long time, I didn’t even want to believe it happened,” he notes in the trailer. “I didn’t know, even if he was a bad person, that he would do something to me.”
“Just because you’re not a good husband doesn’t mean you can’t be a good father — and the fact that he’s not even trying,” adds Drea. “Whatever he did to me, he did. But he shouldn’t have done that to my children.” underlined.
Earlier this year, a federal appeals court in Chicago upheld R. Kelly’s conviction and 20-year prison sentence for possession of child pornography and child seduction.

The R&B, hip hop and pop singer, songwriter and music producer pleaded guilty to six of 13 counts of possessing and producing child pornography and enticing a minor in September. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison in February, but will serve almost all of his sentence concurrently with a prison sentence he served last year for extortion and trafficking.
The additional sentence means that R. Kelly will now serve a total of 31 years in prison and will not be eligible for parole until he is 80 years old.
Earlier this year, the final installment of Lifetime’s “Surviving R. Kelly” docu-series aired, covering his 2022 federal trial. The series also examines the role those around him played, either by closing the turning a blind eye to his three-decade abuse or helping him see his victims, such as booking flights for underage girls to travel.
He also looked into R.Kelly’s marriage to the late singer Aaliyah, revealing that he silenced her and her family with a non-disclosure agreement after their marriage, which took place when Aaliyah was 15 with her age faked as 18, was annulled on the marriage certificate.
