You have put mascara and suddenly your eyes start to itch? Are they suddenly red or swollen? If so, you might have allergy on your mascara. Don’t panic, this doesn’t mean you have to fly here and now. However, it’s good to know a few things to avoid any problems.

Mascara, like all cosmetics, can cause irritation. Usually, allergic reactions are due to ingredients such as fragrance, preservatives or dyes. Although it’s important to watch the ingredients, don’t cut preservatives out of your life completely. They are necessary to prevent the growth of microorganisms that can cause infections.

Symptoms of a mascara allergy include redness, stinging, tearing, and swollen eyelids. In some cases, rashes around the eyes or pimples at the base of the eyelashes may also appear. If you feel something like this, it’s good to pay attention to which mascara you use.

What can you do about it?

To reduce the chances of developing an allergy, it is better to choose black mascaras instead of brown, blue or red ones. Also, it is very important to avoid waterproof formulas, as they usually contain ingredients that can irritate the eyes and their removal requires more aggressive products, which can worsen symptoms.

If you want to avoid further irritation from your mascara, there are some practical tips you can follow. First of all, do a patch test. Put some mascara on the inside of your hand with a clean cotton swab and wait 24 hours to see if you have a reaction. But remember, the skin around the eyes is more sensitive, so there can be a reaction even if you don’t notice anything on your hand.

Also, it’s a good idea to change your mascara every three months. Using it for a long time can cause reactions. And of course, don’t give your mascara to others. It is easy to transfer germs and cause allergies.

If your mascara is dry, do not add water to liquefy it. Water can introduce microorganisms that cause infections. Instead, use a mild makeup remover such as jojoba oil. You soak some cotton with water, wring it out, and then put some jojoba oil on it. Leave it on the lashes for a while so you don’t have to scrub too hard to remove the mascara.

With these tips, you will be able to enjoy your makeup without worrying about allergies and irritations. Protect your eyes and pay attention to the products you use.
