Actress Regina Duarte, 77, says she loved the film “I’m Still Here”, starring Fernanda Torres, 59. In the film, pre-nominated for an Oscar in the Best International Film category, Fernanda is Eunice, wife of former congressman Rubens Paiva , killed by the military dictatorship.

Participating in the Se Lig podcast, Regina praised the acting, direction and the result of the film. And he said that he even wanted to make films. The comment could have gone unnoticed if it weren’t for her perspective on the topic.

In May 2020, the then special secretary for Culture of the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) minimized the deaths that occurred during the period in an interview with CNN Brasil.

“There was torture. Stalin, how many deaths? Hitler, how many deaths? I don’t want to drag a cemetery of death on my back. I’m light, I’m alive! Let’s stay alive! Why look back?”, he said.

“You have to look forward, you have to love the country. Keep demanding things that happened in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s? Guys, let’s move forward.” And he finished by singing “Pra Frente Brasil”, the Brazilian team’s jingle during the 1970 World Cup.

On social media, some internet users criticized the actress’ stance. “She didn’t understand the film,” said a follower. “She must miss it. She saw the doors close after the positions she took. There comes a time when the penny drops”, said another.

“Maybe she’s trying to redeem herself for being ignored even by former co-workers in theater, TV and cinema,” another internet user posted.

Regina was also one of the artists who supported the anti-democratic acts that spread across the country after Lula’s victory in 2022.

“These meetings like today, peaceful, filled with the holy peace of God, filled with that exchange of smiles of tribal recognition… they are always a celebration. I get emotional,” she wrote on Instagram at the time.
