The year that is about to end was one of great losses in the arts and sport. Prominent names in various areas left us throughout 2024, to the sadness of their fans, friends and families.
In the first week of January, the football world was shaken by the news of Zagallo’s death. He was 92 years old and died on the 5th, due to multiple organ failure. The sports icon is the biggest World Cup winner. He won four: in 1958 and 1962, as a player, in 1970, when he worked as a coach, and in 1994, as an assistant coach.
Still in the first month of the year, Jandira Martini was gone. The actress was 78 years old and was treated for recurrent lung cancer. With almost five decades of career, she is remembered for notable roles in soap operas such as “O Clone” (2001), with the character Zoraide El Adib, and “Caminho das Indias” (2009), as Puja Hitid.
At the beginning of April, another blow, with the death of cartoonist Ziraldo. “Father” of the character Menino Maluquinho and one of the creators of the newspaper O Pasquim, died at the age of 91, from multiple organ failure. His books have sold more than 10 million copies and have been published in several languages.
On television, another irreparable loss. Considered the greatest communicator in the country, Silvio Santos died in August, aged 93, victim of bronchopneumonia. Sundays — and Brazilian TV in general — will never be the same without the presence of Senor Abravanel, a former street vendor who used his intuition, business acumen and incomparable talent to communicate and changed the way entertainment is made on the Brazil.
A country that also suffered the grief of losing, in October, one of the most iconic voices in journalism. Cid Moreira wished Jornal Nacional viewers a “good night” eight thousand times. The first was at the television premiere, on September 1, 1969, and the last, in 1996. He died at the age of 97, due to multiple organ failure during treatment for pneumonia.
Also in October, fans of former British band One Direction were surprised by the unexpected news of singer Liam Payne’s death, aged 31. He was on vacation in Argentina when he fell from the balcony of the room where he was staying, on the 3rd floor.
