The archaeologist and peer professor of prehistoric archeology of the University of Athens, George S. Korres, died at the age of 85.
“George S. Korres was accessible and loved by colleagues, always available to his students, for advice, guidance and support. To those who were lucky enough to meet him and work with him, his loss leaves his feelings of sadness, but also of gratitude.
G. Korres was born in 1940 and originated from Naxos. Son of Professor of Ancient Greek Philology and Rector of the University of Athens Stylianos Korre, studied at the Department of History -Archaeology of the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens -even from 1952 to 1962 as a fellowship of the Foundation. From 1963 to 1965 he studied corresponding studies at the University of Bonn with a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
After completing his studies, he worked at the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens, where he served, from 1966 to 1973, assistant and curator, from 1973 to 1982 a permanent Assistant Professor and from 1982 to 2007 a regular professor of prehistoric archeology. He was, among other things, a member of the German Archaeological Institute, the Academy of Gothenburg and a full member of the Berlin Academy of Libniz.
G. Korres conducted many excavations mainly in Messinia, while he was responsible for excavations in Pylos. He had been honored with the Henry Schliemann medals of the Ankershagen, Neubukow Museums, the Berlin Academy of Sciences, as well as the 50-year Winckelmann Medal of the “Winckelmann-Gesellschaft” Foundation in Strdal in 1990.
