With a honored body for 2025, the Museum of Heraklion, a multitude of imaginative events and free entry to museums across the country, is celebrated today, May 18th, the International Museum Day is celebrated.

This is the institution introduced in 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in its attempt to highlight their role in modern society.

So every year on 18/5, and all month, the Greek section of ICOM organizes a variety of cultural events throughout the country. It also honors one or more Greek museums, where the central event of the celebration takes place.

So this year, the Greek section of ICOM has chosen the Museum of Heraclides as a honored body for 2025, as it combines science with art, the historical dimension with innovation by providing knowledge and entertainment with an appeal to all ages. The central event of the celebration will take place today, at 19:00 in the Hall of the Museum of Heraklion, 16 Heraklidon Street, Thissio.

On the same day at the Museum there will be a series of guided tours and other free admission events. At the same time, throughout May, throughout Greece, there will be museums and other cultural exhibitions, educational programs and other events included in a special form, available digitally on the website of the Greek Department: https://icom-greece.mini.icom.museum/

But there is also a message that the international organization wants to convey, so every year it chooses a subject. This year, the International Museum Day is negotiating the topic of “Museums and Societies in Continuous Change”. As the Greek section of ICOM states in its announcement, “nowadays, in a time of constant transformation of society, the way we perceive the world has changed. Museums redefine their role and create new conditions of operating and communicating with the public. By choosing this issue, ICOM invites us to envision new ways to maintain and deepen our cultural identity, reinforcing the role of museums as vital social pillars of development. “

In this context, this year’s celebration of International Museum Day will focus on issues such as intangible cultural heritage, the power of young people and new technologies.
