What is the difference between oily and overly oily scalp?

If you’re already a fan of dry shampoo, you probably have increased oiliness on your scalp. Although we usually want to get rid of oiliness from the hair as soon as possible, it is important to know that its presence is completely normal.

Like the skin on our body, the scalp has several layers. Specifically, it has the epidermis (the upper layer), the dermis (the next layer, which contains the blood vessels, pockets and sebaceous glands) and the subcutaneous layer (the lower layer. What causes this oil imbalance in the scalp?

One of the main reasons, of course, is that you do not wash your hair often enough. This leads to an accumulation of oil and dead cells. But the opposite could also be to blame: washing your hair too often. Another possible cause is the presence of some inflammation. For example, seborrheic dermatitis can lead to redness and flaking of the scalp, while appearing to be oily. If you suspect this, then it is best to consult your dermatologist.

Finally, there may be hormonal factors behind the oiliness of the scalp. In particular, the rate of sebum production is affected by sex hormones. Thus, with the increase of androgens (such as testosterone) or thyroxine (a hormone secreted by the thyroid gland), the production of sebum also increases. Conversely, if there was an increase in estrogen (the female sex hormone), then there would be a decrease in sebum.

Fortunately, there are solutions that can help.

Use a shampoo or serum with BHAs

You may know BHAs from your facial care routine. In particular, beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), such as salicylic acid, are some of the best over-the-counter acne medications on the market. Essentially, they exfoliate the surface of the skin and penetrate the pores to remove oils and clog the pores.

The good news is that they can do the same with your scalp. So you can try a shampoo that contains this magic ingredient. For example, a shampoo or serum with salicylic acid can help eliminate dead cells and accumulation, as well as reduce oiliness in the scalp. These products penetrate deep into the pores and are a good choice for those with oily scalp.

Do daily massage on the scalp

If you have oily scalp you can show oiliness up to the middle of the hair while your ends remain dry and brittle. Therefore, instead of over-washing followed by over-treatment, massage the scalp with a good brush. This way, you will distribute the natural oil / sebum of your hair from the middle to the ends.

Use less emollient

Conditioners are great for keeping your hair smooth and hydrated. However, they should be used only on the middle and ends of the hair – not on the scalp. The scalp provides its own moisture to the hair around it, so the conditioner will simply leave an unwanted feeling of oiliness. Also, emollient treatments can worsen the oiliness of the scalp if applied to it.
