Little damage was caused by the fire in northern Chios, the Byzantine church of St. George and the Castle of Volissos, a statement from the Ministry of Culture said today. Specifically, according to the Ministry of Culture, the large fire that broke out on Tuesday (12/08) in northern Chios, in the Potamia area and spread rapidly, burning large areas in the area of Volissos and neighboring communities, caused limited damage to the following monuments:

1. In the surrounding area of the church of St. George in Prasteia, between Sidirounda and Volissos. It is a one -storey 6.28 x 4m outer road, covered with a semicircular arch. According to his stakeholder inscription, the temple was built in 1415 by donor Batista Justinian da Campis and his wife Bey (K). The temple is a record of frescoes that until recently were covered with soot. The painting decoration is influenced by the spirit of classical tradition, which revived in the Paleologian era, demonstrating that Chios and in the 15th century remains artistically informed about the contemporary painting of the largest centers. The maintenance and rehabilitation work of the Temple has just been completed by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chios, in the framework of the project “Men of the Chios Monumental Painting”, which is performed by EFA Chios with resources from the Recovery Fund. The fire has destroyed much of the country’s country equipment. Since Monday, 18/8, the Ephorate of Antiquities is dealing with the restoration of the surrounding area of the monument.

2. On the facilities and infrastructure of the Byzantine castle of Volissos (11th century), located above the homonymous settlement. The Ministry of Culture through the relevant Ephorate of Antiquities immediately plans to repair the damage. The archaeological collection of Volissos did not suffer the slightest damage.
