The Rio Police concluded that the death of funk player Kevin Nascimento Bueno, MC Kevin, was an accident. In a statement, the 16th Police Station (Barra da Tijuca), responsible for the investigations, said it would suggest to the Court that the investigation be closed “due to lack of elements that characterize a crime”.
MC Kevin died at age 23 after falling from the 5th floor of a hotel on the edge of Barra da Tijuca, in the west side of Rio, on the night of May 16th. According to police investigations, the singer tried to leave the room where he was jumping over the balcony to reach the lower floor, but lost his support, lost his balance and fell. “Tragic, but atypical fact, with no criminal legal provision for those involved,” says the corporation’s statement.
“In new testimonies, the witnesses did not add relevant or contradictory information to what had already been investigated”, completes the note.
Known for such hits as “Trojan Horse”, “Favelado Vencedor” and “O Menino Encantou a Quebrada”, Kevin had 8.6 million followers on Instagram and 537,000 on YouTube. The artist, born in Vila Ede, a neighborhood in the north of São Paulo, had made several partnerships with other artists of the genre such as MC Guimê and Igu.
Kevin was not only known for his artwork, but also for getting into trouble. In January of this year, he became one of the most talked about subjects on social media after making a series of videos on Instagram minimizing harassment situations.
He has been much criticized for insinuating that women are to blame for offensive male comments in sexy photos. “It’s all butts out in Instagram Stories, and of course there will be men who will praise, yes, because if you do it, it’s to praise. Now it’s not because you made a compliment, a bullshit that’s sexist or ‘Ouch , you’re ridiculous’. Then you can’t,” he said at the time.
He then suggested that women post pictures in the church. “So, stop posting a photo of the butt in the air. Start posting a picture of a church with a Bible in hand, with those nuns’ clothes, do that. Now don’t say that any man is sexist,” he said.
As early as May 2020, at the height of the coronavirus pandemide, Kevin became involved in yet another controversy, after breaking through social isolation. This time, he exchanged barbs with also funkista Lady Chokey, who ended up accusing the musician of homophobia and said she would take appropriate measures against him.
Earlier in the week before the event, Kevin confirmed that he tested positive for Covid-19 and apologized for not maintaining social isolation. “I was wrong, I was even worse for not having contained my desire for freedom, which is natural for any young person my age, and to expose the people around me,” he stated.
The funkeiro’s attitude was criticized by Lady Chokey, who called him “a brat”, and accused him of homophobia for referring to her in male form. “It’s not because you’re friends with Matheus Mazzafera that you stop being homophobic, transphobic. That’s a totally ridiculous speech, past and old.”
