The Patriarchal Grand School, with an uninterrupted 571 -year offering in Greek education, will be temporarily relocated to another building, because the historic building where it is housed in Fanari should be reinforced by its static, in the case of an earthquake that may be hit by Constantinople.

In a statement released by the School’s address, it is noted:

“The serious problem that threatens our city is now known: the dubious suitability of many public buildings over an impending earthquake. When it comes to buildings that house educational institutions, the issue acquires dimensions that allow no indifference and no postponement.

“With a sense of responsibility, but also anxiety about the future of our youth, we inform the exquisite members of the Diaspora of the decision of the Department of Education of the City, which was notified to us on September 19, 2025 and concerns the need to enhance the static of the historical building of the Patriarchate.

The decision provides for building aid and some repairs, work that needs to be done seamlessly without the presence of students, teachers and other staff within the building in order to protect their safety. For this reason there will be a school transfer to a building that meets all the requirements of earthquake and suitability for safe and ideal operation.

The same announcement emphasizes in the most “categorical way” that “because they have been circulated, untrue, even completely false news of the Patriarchal Grand School, the only valid source of information itself is the management of the school. Everything else affects not only the prestige of this historical institution, but also the truth itself. “

According to the school’s management, “misinformation is not only about the issue of building aid, but also to yet another issue: that of not enrollment in the first grade of the Gymnasium”, due to a population shrinkage of the homogeneity.

“For this issue we are not intended to enter public debate, because all of our thoughts and positions have been submitted for many years, in successive meetings with stakeholders of homogenous education. The issue is well known and clear and is not capable of new misinterpretations, “the statement concludes, which” confusing the two above mentioned and independent issues is perceived as a sign of bad option “.

The impressive red brick building of the Grand School of Patriarchate, dominated above the Gulf of Gulf, was built in the two years 1881-1883, in an area that formerly belonged to Dimitrios Kantemir in designs by architect Konstantinos Dimadis. It is the oldest Greek educational institution in operation. It was founded after the Fall of Constantinople by Patriarch Gennadi Scholario in 1454, as a continuation of the Ecumenical Patriarchal School founded in the 4th century by Constantine the Great.
