László Krasznahorkai from Hungary won this year’s Nobel Prize for Literature as announced today by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

He is known for his novels, such as:

  • The Melancholy of Resistance
  • Seiobo there Below

“The Nobel Prize for Literature for 2025 is awarded to Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai for his fascinating and visionary work that in the midst of terrorism, confirms the power of art.”said Mats Malm, a permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy.

Previous winners of the 11 million Swedish Koroni ($ 1.2 million), including French poet and essayist Sally Proudom, who won the first prize, American novelist and writer Wyyyyyan 1953, Turkish Orhan Pamuk in 2006 and Norwegian John fought in 2023.

Last year’s award was won by South Korean writer Han Kang, who became the 18th woman – the first was Swedish writer Selma Lagerlov in 1909 – and the first South Korean to receive the award.

The Nobel Prize in Literature is the fourth announced this year, following the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, Medicine and Physics earlier this week.

The Nobel Prizes were established by the will of Swedish inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel. They have been awarded every year since 1901, recognizing the excellent contribution to science, literature and peace, with the award process being interrupted mainly during world wars.
