Damon Albarn expressed the view that “Oasis have done a really good job of making Britpop look like the biggest thing on Earth.” The Blur and Gorillaz frontman in an interview with Sopitas, spoke about Britpop music and how it continues to permeate pop culture to this day.

Blur and Oasis were known as rivals in the ‘Battle of Britpop’ – a battle for the charts on 14 August 1995. The two bands went head-to-head by releasing singles on the same day. Blur released ‘Country House’ from ‘The Great Escape’ album, while Oasis released ‘Roll With It’ from their breakthrough album ‘What’s The Story (Morning Glory)’. Last year it was revealed that a West End play would be based on the troubled era.

Both bands have become big names, with Oasis currently on a reunion tour and Blur holding their own comeback shows and releasing new album ‘The Ballad Of Darren’ in 2023.

Now, Albarn has spoken about that period, telling Sopitas: “Oasis have done a really good job of making Britpop look like the greatest thing on Earth.”

“I don’t know how they do it, how they keep doing it. They’re just holding on to this thing, but they’re doing it really well.” underlined.

Albarn has previously spoken about the ‘Battle of Britpop’, revealing he is ‘happy to concede defeat’ in the legendary rivalry. “Well, it was obvious, wasn’t it?” said the Blur singer. “I think we can officially say that Oasis won the battle, the war, the campaign, everything” noted.

He also called himself a “prophet” for predicting an eventual Oasis reunion, which he claimed would happen in 2023. “Well, you can’t think that two brothers can’t be reconciled, sooner or later. It’s good, as I see it” he explained.
