Known for her work on Disney’s “Descendants” trilogy, Sofia Carson, 29, now celebrates the opportunity to show vulnerability and her beliefs through music. Proud to be part of a “noisy” generation, the artist says that the path that led her to success was not easy, but she does not regret any decision.
“I’m very proud of every no I’ve said”, says she, who released her first musical album in March, entitled “Sofia Carson”. The young woman recalls that she preferred to deny jobs that could quickly bring her fame, but that did not correspond to her values. “I was considered ‘difficult’ for years, until I was treated with respect for being a woman who believed in what I believed in.”
For her, despite still needing changes, the art industry and the world are going through an evolution, and this has brought her the security to be able to deliver her feelings and deep secrets in her music and present what she really is. “[Agora]we celebrate being different and being who we are, without remorse.” F5.
It was during the Covid-19 pandemic that Carson was first able to “dive in and focus the music to tell the story that was in my heart”. The singer claims there wasn’t a point where she decided to share this with the public, and that she “always knew my first album was going to be more vulnerable and personal”.
Even exploring her personal side in music, the artist does not intend to keep away from the screen and is excited for the release of the novel “Purple Hearts” (Netflix), which she stars alongside Nicholas Galitzine, which should arrive on streaming “soon. “. And are there any plans to visit Brazil? “I can’t wait to come back, sing, hug and cry with them [fãs brasileiros]”. See edited excerpts from the interview.
You became well known after playing Evie, the daughter of the Evil Queen, in “Descendants”. What is it like to present the real Sofia to the world, without being behind some role?
The world has fallen in love with our characters and I am eternally grateful [a Disney] for giving me Evie. It’s a beautiful process when, after playing a role and people getting to know you as that character, you can show my reflection in the music, and now people can get to know Sofia for who I am.
And your first album is very personal. Where did the decision to expose a more vulnerable?
I always wanted to write a love story. About falling in love, breaking your heart, picking up the pieces and surviving… There were things I was keeping secret from myself, so it wasn’t really a decision. I always knew my first album would be more vulnerable and personal.
Did the pandemic period help you in this process?
This period made me reach more vulnerable places, because I was basically using music as therapy. That’s the beauty of music, we get to get into our hearts and share our secrets with the world, and they stay safe there.
You’ve said a few times that you chose to say “no” to opportunities that came your way. Do you regret something you didn’t accept throughout your career, whether in music or as an actress?
I’m very proud of every no I said, when I didn’t use my voice, my body or my music for a role that I didn’t believe in and that wouldn’t reflect who I am as a woman. It was difficult at first, because the industry is not used to people saying no to something that could bring them fame.
Can we say that the art industry has improved in this regard over the years?
Changes are happening, and women are ‘noisier’ than ever before. It is impossible to silence us. I feel honored to be part of a generation that is changing the world with their voice. Now, we celebrate being different without remorse. We still have ways to fight, but we are making progress.
Do you have plans to come to Brazil?
I always ask my team when we can go to Brazil, and I know they are working on it. One of my last trips before the pandemic was to Brazil. I passed through Recife and São Paulo. I was blown away by the passion and energy of the Brazilian fans, we have a connection.
Do you believe that social media helps you create that connection with fans?
Absolutely. It’s amazing to be able to have this direct contact with them every minute, whether through Twitter, Instagram or TikTok. We are deeply connected… I truly believe that we are a family. Even if I don’t know them, they see me, know and understand my art. It’s very pure and beautiful. I would like to bottle it and keep it with me forever.
