In south of Laconiathere is one small coastal settlement which bears his name Indo-European roots.
The reason for him Mezapothe fishing village of Mani whose name comes from the Indo-European word “apa”, meaning water, and the adjective “medium” of the Aeolian dialect, always according to the linguist Dikaios Vagiakakos.
Like the whole wider area of Mani, this magical settlement of Mezapos is built on a rocky and barren location between two torrents, but with the most magnificent view one could ever imagine.

In the past, the Mezapos was the abode and refuge of the legendary pirate Nikolaos Sassaris or Katzos, known in history as the “One-eyed”, who acted in the Mediterranean during the second half of the 18th century. At caves of Mezapos hid them shipsτα spoils and the treasures of him, while in the same area was also the 16 meters high tower, in which there were specially constructed basements but also secret corridors leading to the sea. The tower had cannons that were stolen or sold, while nowadays, its ruins are not reminiscent of the grandeur of that time.
Looking at Mezapos from above, one can understand at once all the legends concerning this wonderful place. “Hidden” in the homonymous bay of the Tigani peninsula, with the most “rooted” green waters in which the whole beauty of the barren brown Mani land is reflected, captures what it really is. A wild place dressed in an authentic reality wrapped in legends and stories to calmly travel the mind to its own shocking truth.
