Known internationally as Vangelis o Evangelos Odysseas Papathanasiouwho passed away on Tuesday at the age of 79, traveled to the oceans of music, in the vastness of the universe, but also opened to the cinematic seas. It was his “second career”.
A large part of the compositions of Vangelis Papathanassiou were created to frame film productions, as “dressing” a film raises its level of music, it is a second narrative of the film. Vangelis Papathanassiou is considered one of the leading film soundtrack composers, along with “teachers” of the genre, such as Ennio Morricone, John Williams and the younger Hans Zimmer.
Being great himself, the Greek composer collaborated with great directors, who knew the importance of music in cinema, names such as Roman Polanski, Oliver Stone and Sir Ridley Scott in extremely fruitful collaborations.
The top soundtrack is considered to be Chariots of Fire for the 1981 film of the same name by Hugh Hudson, which won the Oscar for Best Original Score in 1982. Without Vangelis’s musical investment the film would not be the same. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the same is true to an even greater extent for the legendary science fiction film Blade Runner (based on the book The Electric Sheep – Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick)
