by

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) vetoed this Wednesday (25) the inscription of psychiatrist Nise da Silveira in the book of Heroes and Heroines of the Fatherland.

The doctor started working in the area in the 1940s and became known for being one of the pioneers of the movement against aggressive methods that were applied at the time to patients with mental disorders. In 1936, she was arrested after being denounced for involvement with leaders of communism in Brazil.

She died in 1999 and the honor had been approved by the Senate in April of this year. To veto it, the Chief Executive claimed that “it is not possible to assess the scope of the achievements of the doctor Nise Magalhães da Silveira and their impact on the development of the Nation, despite her contribution to the area of occupational therapy”.

Silveira became known for being a critic of treatments such as electroshock, lobotomy, straitjacket and isolation in hospices. Defender of more humane methods, she inserted the interaction with art, especially painting, as a way to treat mental disorders.

Many works by his patients are still in exhibitions around the country and have already been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo.

His work gained worldwide projection and his work was known by internationally renowned psychiatrists, such as the Swiss Carl Jung.

Bolsonaro, however, disagreed with the Senate’s initiative to honor her. “Furthermore, it is prioritized that personalities from the country’s history are honored at the national level, as long as the tribute is not inspired by ideals that are dissonant from the projections of the democratic state”, said the president.

Senator Eliziane Gama (Citizenship-MA) was the rapporteur of the project in the Senate and defended the psychiatrist’s trajectory. “Dr. Nise was an extraordinary psychiatrist, who implemented humanized treatments for mental disorders and created a new moment in relation to these treatments in our Brazilian society. woman made for Brazil”, he said.
