Opinion – Julio Abramczyk: Even with vaccines, masks still matter

by

Almost ignored at the beginning of the pandemic, the face mask against Covid-19 is now back in full force.

Its important help for the effective control of the virus is confirmed, which is here to stay.

In the week of May 22 to 28, according to the USP-Covid Epidemiological Bulletin of Wednesday (1), there was an 84% increase in the daily average of new cases and a 41% increase in the average of hospitalizations both in ICUs and in hospitals. wards.

In the same period, deaths, on average 39 deaths per day, did not change, despite the increase in cases and hospitalizations. This shows the benefits of the vaccination campaign.

In the journal The Lancet Public Health, doctor Peter Hotez and collaborators from the school of tropical medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, USA, recommend maintaining the use of masks after the application of the anti-Covid vaccine in the entire population.

For public health experts, this measure reduces the number of deaths and hospitalizations.

They explain that the use of a face mask brings great benefits to the fight against Covid-19 due to the emergence of highly transmissible variants, the decline in immunity generated by the vaccine over time and the increase in social relationships with the passage of the pandemic.

They conclude that the lower the level of vaccination coverage of a population, the greater the benefit of using masks.
