An important international award was recently received by the Metropolitan General Hospital and in particular the Cardiovascular Laboratory, which was certified by the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) of the European Society of Cardiology (ES) by the European Society of Cardiology – ES Extensive evaluation both in terms of the scientific adequacy of its staff, as well as in the various operating protocols and the adequacy of its infrastructure (equipment, rooms, etc.).
The certification concerns all three types of cardiac ultrasounds: transthoracic ultrasound, esophageal ultrasound and dynamic ultrasound (Stress Echo). This fact makes the Metropolitan General Cardiac Ultrasound Laboratory one of the few in Greece and one of the few in Europe to have this certification.
What does accreditation by the European Society of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) mean?
The operating standards of the cardiovascular laboratories were set by the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging in 2007 to protect cardiovascular patients from undergoing ultrasound or non-surgical cardiac .
Therefore, this certification guarantees that the findings of the ultrasound studies performed in the Metropolitan General Cardiac Ultrasound Laboratory are reliable, while the Laboratory in general contributes to the provision of optimal quality of care to the cardiovascular patients. In addition, certified laboratories can be selected by the European Society of Cardiovascular Imaging to participate in research projects, and to host educational events.
Services provided by the Laboratory
The Metropolitan General Laboratory of Cardiac Ultrasound was distinguished for the application of practices that comply with European standards, both in medical and equipment and infrastructure. Performs daily the full range of imaging cardiological examinations such as:
• Triplex cardiac ultrasound with the latest techniques (3D ultrasound and 2D strain), when required.
• Esophageal echocardiography using a 3D transducer with 3D imaging capability (necessary in the assessment of valvular diseases and other heart diseases).
• Dynamic ultrasound (Stress Echo) with intravenous administration of dobutamine or with exercise with or without the use of Contrast Echo.
The medical staff of the Laboratory consists of the Director Mrs. Agathi Stergiou, Cardiologist, MD, the Deputy Director Mr. Konstantinos Egglezopoulos, Cardiologist, MD, PhD and the associate Cardiologists Mr. Archontoula Michelogona, MD, PhD, Mr. Dimitrios F.
