The Omicron variant of the coronavirus is likely to spread worldwide, and depending on the characteristics of the variant, “there may be future outbreaks of covid-19, which could have serious consequences” in some areas, the World Health Organization warned today. Health (WHO).
The UN agency, in its technical advice to its 194 members, called on them to speed up the vaccination of vulnerable groups against covid-19 and to “draw up mitigation plans” in order to keep their basic health services operational.
“Omicron has an unprecedented number of mutations in its protein spike, some of which are of concern for their possible impact on the course of the pandemic,” the WHO warned.
“Overall, the global risk from the new concern Omicron is estimated to be very high,” he said.
However, the agency estimated that more research was needed to understand Omicron’s ability to evade the protection caused by vaccines and previous infections from other coronavirus strains, explaining that more evidence would be available in the coming weeks.
“Covid-19 cases and infections are expected in vaccinated, albeit at a lower and expected rate,” he concluded.
