Rio announces start of vaccination against Covid for 3 and 4 year olds

by

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, announced on social media the start of vaccination against Covid for children aged 3 and 4 with Coronavac.

The vaccine was released by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) for the range between 3 to 5 years on Wednesday (13).

As 5-year-old children could already take the Pfizer immunizer, vaccination for this group was already allowed. Now, children of that age will also be able to receive Coronavac.

For the age group of 3 to 4 years, Coronavac should be administered in two doses, 28 days apart, as is the case with the other groups.

According to the city hall of Rio, between the 15th and 19th of July it will be the turn of the children aged 4 years; from 20 to 22, the scheme will be aimed at those who are 3 years old. After that date, anyone over the age of 3 can take it.

In Rio, the estimated audience of children in the new range is 190,000. The Municipal Health Department has 100 thousand doses of Coronavac in stock. The agency has already sent a letter to the Ministry of Health with a request for a new injection of the vaccine.

Rio was the first municipality to announce the start of the vaccination schedule. In São Paulo, the Municipal Health Department will follow the calendar of the State Immunization Program.

In São Paulo, around 313,826 children between three and four years of age are eligible — 155,608 are three years old and 158,218 are four years old.

Regarding the amount of vaccines for this group, the city of São Paulo is in talks with the state government.

In a note, the Ministry of Health said that it will evaluate, together with the Technical Advisory Board on Immunizations, the use of the immunizer in this age group. The folder stated that the entire stock of the Coronavac vaccine was distributed to the states and the Federal District.

The Ministry of Health also said that the technical guidelines are communicated immediately to the states and municipalities from the beginning of the campaign and reinforces the guidance so that everyone follows the agreed measures.
