Tzanakis on SKAI: In 1-2 weeks the “imprint” of the 15th of August – The “Centaur” mutation looks dynamic

The professor said that at the moment there is a significant drop in admissions to hospitals as well as in deaths

In about one or two hours, the epidemiological “imprint” left by the celebrations for the 15th of August will be seen, said Professor of Pulmonology Nikos Tzanakis, speaking to SKAI and the show “Morning News”.

However, he made it clear that the pandemic in our country is in the second week of a very significant de-escalation of cases. At the same time, the professor spoke of a significant drop in hospital admissions, about 30% as he said, but also in deaths, about 25%, since their peak period. “We anticipate that we will have a good September,” he added.

Asked about the Centaur mutation and whether it could lead to an outbreak of the pandemic, he replied that it shows “dynamics” and “could be the next strain that will trouble us”. However, he added that the Omicron 4-5 mutations are very contagious and will not let the “Centaur” prevail easily. “It makes an impression that it hasn’t prevailed so far, let’s be optimistic”, said the professor

For the patients who are admitted to the hospitals with coronavirus and then end up, he emphasized that 99% are the elderly, usually over 85 years old, or people with very serious underlying diseases. In fact, many of them have not even taken the 4th installment, said the professor.

He also recommended the attention of those returning from holidays so that if they are going to come into contact with elderly people, they should wear a mask, have a test done and after 5-6 days from the return, sympathize with them.

Finally, in view of the opening of schools, there is no need to be obliged to wear a mask. “Parents by definition have responsibility for their children and know how they will behave. We don’t let the child go to school if he is sick or we do a self-test if there is a case in the family environment”, said Mr. Tzanakis
