West Nile virus: Five dead in Greece – 87 cases – Seven patients in ICU

In which metropolitan and regional units of the country the cases have been identified – How many are the serious cases.

The death five people has caused until today the West Nile virus in our country according to EODY, while it has infected dozens more people of all ages. The virus is found mainly in Central Macedonia, while cases are also found in Thessaly.

All those who died were elderly (over 77 years) and had underlying diseases. The average age of victims of the virus is 85 years.

The total number of cases reached 87. Of these patients, 52 had central nervous system (CNS) manifestations. The average age of these patients is 72 years. The youngest was 14 years old, while the oldest was 90 years old.

The manifestations they developed were encephalitis and/or meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis.

The remaining 35 patients had a mild illness (e.g. fever), without neurological manifestations. However, most of them required hospitalization. Of the rest, 50 have already been discharged from the hospital. The patients who are still hospitalized amount to 20. Seven of them are hospitalized in ICU and the remaining 13 in non-intensive care beds.

  • 42 cases in the metropolitan area of ​​Thessaloniki. 25 of these were cases with CNS involvement
  • 3 cases of CNS involvement in Kilkis
  • 3 cases in Pella (the 1st with CNS attack)
  • 2 cases of CNS involvement in Pieria
  • 20 incidents in Imathia. 11 of them with CNS involvement
  • 6 cases in Halkidiki (the 5 with CNS involvement)
  • 1 incident without CNS involvement in Serres
  • 4 cases (2 with CNS involvement) in Larissa
  • 2 cases (with CNS attack) in Trikala

Four cases are still under investigation, one of which has CNS involvement.
