Thessaloniki – Ray of hope? First encouraging signs of viral load de-escalation (tables)

by

The viral load in the municipal waste of Thessaloniki is slightly reduced in the last measurements for the research conducted by the AUTh Wastewater Epidemiology Team with EYATH, in collaboration with the Region of Central Macedonia and within the National Network of the National Public Health Organization (Public Health Organization) .

As shown in the diagrams presented by APE-MPE, the initial stabilization trend recorded from November 26 is followed in the first days of December by the first signs of de-escalation of viral load prices.

Specifically, in the samples taken daily at the entrance of the Thessaloniki Wastewater Treatment Plant, regarding the rationalized values of relative viral load secretion, the average value of the two most recent measurements, namely, Wednesday 01/12 and Thursday 02/12 is:

Marginally reduced (-10%) in relation to the average value of the two immediately preceding measurements of Monday 29/10 and Tuesday 30/10.
-Reduced (-28%) compared to the average price of the previous Wednesday 24/11 and Thursday 25/11.

“This reduction in viral load over time is an encouraging sign, but it should be interpreted with caution, as the epidemiological picture of the city is extremely strained and its improvement is not expected to happen overnight. All the more so when the expected mobility and sociability of Christmas will increase the risk of spreading the virus within the family. The significant increase in vaccinations remains the most positive element at this time “, said to APE-MPE the rector of AUTh and scientifically responsible for the research project, Professor Nikos Papaioannou.

The coronavirus assessment methodology in municipal waste, developed by the AUTh team, streamlines the measurements of the virus genome concentration based on 24 environmental factors, which may alter the results of the measurements.

Speaking to SKAI, pulmonologist Nikos Tzanakis stated, however, that this week the flattening and slight de-escalation of cases has already begun, ie “we will go around 500 to 600 cases by less than the previous one, I hope this will be maintained, and it is not something temporary, the models show that it will be maintained “. “It is expected after 2 weeks of relative stabilization and de-escalation of deaths and intubations,” he stressed.

“Unfortunately, at Christmas we will go with high numbers of both the intubated and the dead,” he added.
