Monkey pox: EU secures over 10,000 batches of tecovirimat for treatment

by

“We have secured over 10,000 treatments to help those affected by monkeypox,” said Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou.

The European Commission secured over 10,000 treatments with tecovirimat to treat monkeypox. This emergency supply is funded by the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) and is channeled through rescEU to treat patients in Member States in immediate need.

Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou noted that “today, with the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority, we secured over 10,000 treatments to help those affected by monkeypox. In addition to the more than 330,000 vaccines already purchased by the EU, with these treatments we will help Member States meet immediate needs and ensure care for more patients in Europe. The downward trend in monkeypox cases in the EU is encouraging, but it does not mean that the threat has passed or that we can lower our guard. Preparedness is the foundation of our European Health Union.”

Crisis Management Commissioner Yanes Lenarcic noted that “these batches of monkeypox antivirals will provide an extra layer of protection to our citizens. Stocks will be made available to member states based on urgent needs.”

The market of 10,000 lots of tecovirimat can be accessed by all Participating States of the European Civil Protection Mechanism.
