Moderna’s bivalent vaccine is approved for people 6 years of age and older, while Pfizer’s updated vaccine can be given to children 5 years of age and older.

The US Food and Drug Administration approved today Wednesday the booster doses against COVID-19 for childrenadapted to the Omicron variant by Moderna and Pfizer.

Her bivalent vaccine Modern is approved for people 6 years of age and older, while its updated vaccine Pfizer can be given to children aged 5 years and above.

Pfizer indicated that it has the capacity to ship up to 6 million doses for children in the first seven calendar days after receiving the license, without any impact on the distribution production of doses for people 12 years of age and older.

The FDA states that children can receive the booster dose at least two months after completing the initial series or receiving a separate booster dose.

“As children have returned to schools in person and people are returning to pre-pandemic behaviors and activities, there is a potential for increased risk of exposure to the virus that causes the infection,” said Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. “Vaccination remains the most effective measure to prevent the serious consequences of Covid-19, including hospitalization and death,” he added.

The redesigned bivalent boosters from both Moderna and Pfizer target protection specifically against the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants, which are responsible for the majority of Covid-19 infections in the US.
