Bad mantra: Those who have long Covid after 12 months will have it after 18

by

The status of all was assessed six months after the initial infection (at 6, 12 and 18 months).

Most long-term Covid-19 patients who have one or more persistent symptoms of the disease after 12 months will continue to have them after 18 months, a new Scottish scientific study shows.

Almost half of patients feel that they have not fully recovered after a year and a half, while at least one in 20 feel that they have not recovered at all. Among those who were initially hospitalized, the corresponding percentages are even higher.

The researchers, led by Professor Jill Pell of the University of Glasgow, who made the relevant publication in the journal “Nature Communications”, according to the Reuters agency and the NY Times, analyzed data on 33,281 people diagnosed with coronavirus, as well as on almost 63,000 who were not infected by the virus.

The status of all was assessed six months after the initial infection (at 6, 12 and 18 months).

At six months from the initial acute infection, 8% of patients had reported no recovery, 47% partial and 45% complete recovery, at 12 months the respective rates were 8%, 46% and 46%, while at 18 months were similar. It was found that the rate of non-recovery, especially among initially symptomatic patients, after 12 months was 11%, while partial recovery was 51% and complete recovery was 39%. The percentages were similar after 18 months.

Cases of long-term Covid-19 were more likely in those who initially required hospitalization, women, people with socio-economic problems and those with pre-existing health problems.

The most common persistent symptoms were shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations, confusion and brain fog.

Vaccination before initial Covid-19 infection appeared to provide some protection against the risk of subsequent long-term disease.
