Special Stroke Unit at “Papanicolaou” – Symptoms and what to do

by

Stroke can be prevented as long as it is recognized in time and the patient is transferred to a hospital as soon as possible.

Vascular stroke they affect 15 million people worldwide each year and 6 million of them do not survive, according to the World Organization for Vascular Stroke (WSO), which has established October 29 as World Stroke Prevention Day.

Stroke can be prevented as long as it is recognized in time and the patient is transferred to a hospital as soon as possible.

A Special Unit for Vascular Strokes is expected to be acquired in 2023 by the 3rd Neurological Clinic of AUTH at the Papanikolaou Hospitalwith the completion of the relevant design.

In this Unit, the patients will be closely monitored by specialized medical and nursing staff, using the latest technology monitors, which have already been ordered, the director of the 3rd Neurological Clinic of AUTH, associate professor Dimitris Kazis, told APE-MPE.

For the needs of the Unit, a ward with five beds has already been set up, in three of which thrombolysis will be performed in cases of Vascular Stroke events.

“Monitors have been ordered, so now the thrombolysis will be done in the Neurology Clinic and not in the ICU, as we have been doing them until now. Unless there is an incident that is severe. This Unit is something between an Intensive Care Unit and an Enhanced Care Unit, it is what they call abroad the “Stroke Unit” and which in Greek translates as Vascular Stroke Unit. We are waiting for the monitors that we ordered to arrive so that it can operate in 2023,” noted Mr. Kazis.

It should be noted that acute intervention with intravenous thrombolysis for the treatment of Ischemic Stroke has been carried out at the 3rd Neurological Clinic of AUTH since 2013, while there is a Regular Outpatient Clinic specifically for Vascular Strokes, where patients who undergo thrombolysis during hospitalization at the Clinic are monitored , patients with chronic cerebrovascular diseases as well as complex cases that need special treatment and a multidisciplinary approach.

On the occasion of World Stroke Prevention Day, the 3rd Neurological Clinic of AUTH of the “Georgios Papanikolaou” hospital notes that a healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on exercise, smoking cessation and a proper Mediterranean diet is an important weapon in prevention. Immediate recognition of symptoms and calling for emergency help and hospital care are the two key elements defined as “precious time” to save a human life, as every minute counts.

What is AEE and how can we prevent it?

The term stroke means a sudden disturbance in the functioning of the brain and occurs when the blood supply to the brain is disturbed. A Vascular Stroke is defined as damage to the cerebral parenchyma of vascular etiology, which is due either to an interruption of the blood supply to the affected area (ischemic Vascular Stroke), or from bleeding as a consequence of the rupture of a vessel (haemorrhagic Vascular Stroke).

According to instructions from the form issued as a joint action of the Hellenic Neurological Society and the Hellenic Society of Vascular Cerebrovascular Diseases, under the auspices of the World Organization for Vascular Stroke, it is important for everyone:

1. To know and control his personal “risk factors”: blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol.

2. To visit his doctor. To periodically check his heart.

3. To do daily physical exercise and exercise regularly.

4. Follow a healthy diet plan and not be obese

5. To limit the amount of alcohol he consumes.

6. To avoid smoking. If he/she is a smoker, immediately consult a specialist to help him/her quit smoking.

7. Learn how to recognize the warning signs of a stroke.

Warning signs of a stroke

You may be having a stroke if you suddenly experience one or more of the following symptoms:

* Sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body

* Sudden difficulty speaking, or understanding speech

* Sudden loss or “darkening” of vision in one or both eyes, or diplopia (“seeing double”)

* Sudden difficulty walking, or sudden loss of balance

* Sudden vertigo

* Sudden unexplained severe headache that comes on suddenly

To remember:

* Stroke is a medical emergency.

* An ambulance should be called and the patient taken to a hospital as soon as possible.

* Lost time equals lost brain function.

The chance to cure a stroke is limited, after symptoms appear. If you think you or someone close to you is having a stroke, immediately:

* Call 166

* Go to the nearest hospital

Even if the symptoms subside in a few minutes, the patient needs immediate medical advice and examination because some of the episodes actually resolve on their own and quickly. These episodes are called “transient strokes” and are usually warnings of a subsequent stroke.
