Concern in the EU about the outbreak of cases in China

The Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou sent a letter to the Ministers of Health of the 27 member states following the latest developments regarding the coronavirus in China.

Mrs Kyriakidou states in the letter:

“The European Commission is closely monitoring developments in China regarding the alarming increases in COVID-19 cases there and the potential impact on travel from China to EU Member States when the new Chinese travel arrangements come into force in early January” pointing out that it is important to jointly assess the possible effects of the evolving situation and that there is a need for good preparation in order to protect European citizens.

In addition the Health Commissioner notes that at EU level some “key messages” are expected in the coming days for EU travelers planning to travel to China, for those coming from China to the EU, as well as for airline and airport staff . At the same time it is pointed out that it would be important to continue or start the surveillance of sewage, which will include sewage from key airports with the aim that if a new variant of the virus appears, whether it is in China or in the EU, it will be detected in time and there will be a quick reaction.

Finally, Stella Kyriakidou states that she will continue efforts to contact her Chinese counterparts to express the willingness to have support to deal with the current situation.
