Bell from the USA: Omicron’s new sub-variant XBB.1.5 tends to dominate

In the new XBB.1.5 subversion of Omicron it is calculated that it corresponds to40.5% of new coronavirus cases in the US in the week ending Dec. 31, nearly double the rate recorded the previous day, data released Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the main federal public health agency, show.

XBB.1.5 accounted for 21.7% of infections in the week before, ending December 24, according to the same source.

Recombinants of the BA.2 subvariant, XBB and XBB.1.5 together account for 44.1% of SARS-CoV-2 infections this week.

The US remains by far the country hardest hit by the novel coronavirus pandemic globally, with 1.08 million deaths due to COVID-19 out of a total of 100 million cases of SARS-CoV-2, according to data from CDC.

The new sub-variant comes at a time when the planet is on high alert again due to the increase in cases in China and the fear of new variants of Covid-19.
