The acute phase of the Covid-19 pandemic may end in 2022, but the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus will not go away, warned Mike Ryan, head of the World Health Organization’s emergency services.
Speaking to reporters online from Geneva, Ryan also said it was too early to draw conclusions about the severity of the Omicron variant. This could only be done after the variation has spread widely to older people.
Earlier, WHO Director-General of the Tentros Antanom Gebregesus expressed concern that the “tsunami” of cases from the Omicron and Delta variants could lead health systems to the brink of “collapse”.
“I’m very concerned about the fact that Omicron, which is more contagious and runs at the same time as Delta, could cause a tsunami. “This is and will continue to put enormous pressure on depleted healthcare staff and health systems on the brink of collapse.”
