Do you like to enjoy a cup of coffee often during the day? If so, you might be doing a lot of good for your health
A new study published in the journal Nutrients found that those who enjoyed one to three cups of coffee each day had lower blood pressure than non-coffee drinkers.
A research team from the University of Bologna found that coffee can reduce the chances of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and neurodegenerative and liver diseases – and that caffeine has nothing to do with it, said Claudio Borghi, professor and lead study.
“Caffeine is just one of many components in coffee, and certainly not the only one with an active role,” he said in a statement, Earth reports. “Positive effects on human health have indeed been documented even in decaffeinated coffee drinkers.”
The team wanted to know how all the components of coffee benefit health. “We know that caffeine can raise blood pressure, but other bioactive components of coffee seem to offset this effect with a positive end result on blood pressure levels,” Borghi said.
To get their results, the team collected samples from 720 men and 783 women and compared their blood pressure levels, how often they drank coffee and other clinical data.
The findings were clear, said Arrigo Cicero, a professor in the department of medical and surgical sciences at the University of Bologna and first author of the study: Coffee drinkers have lower blood pressure. “Peripheral blood pressure was significantly lower in people who consumed one to three cups of coffee per day than in non-coffee drinkers,” he said.
