The Ministry of Health opened this Tuesday morning (4) a public hearing on the vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 years with Pfizer doses against Covid-19.
Antivaccine doctors, in addition to Congresswoman Bia Kicis (PSL-DF), should participate in the debate.
Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) said that it has technical expertise and rejected the invitation from the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government.
“Anvisa, due to its technical nature, sees that its participation in the public hearing would not add new elements to the theme”, said the agency in a letter sent to the Ministry of Health this Tuesday (4), about an hour before the start of the court hearing.
In addition to representatives of the Ministry of Health, CFM, specialized medical societies and state secretaries, doctors Roberto Zeballos, Augusto Nasser and Roberta Lacerda should be heard. They are against the immunization of children and defend the use of ineffective medications, such as hydroxychloroquine.
Zeballos and Lacerda attended the debate as representatives of the CCJ (Committee on Constitution and Justice and Citizenship) of the Chamber, chaired by Kicis, an ally of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
Anvisa approved the use of Pfizer’s vaccine in the group of 5 to 11 years on December 16, but the government still did not have the vaccines in hand. The idea is to receive 20 million doses by March.
After the decision of Anvisa, President Bolsonaro opened a campaign to discourage the vaccination of children. Still threatened to expose names agency members who participated in the review.
Ctai (Covid-19’s Technical Advisory Board on Immunization) gave a favorable opinion on the inclusion of these children in Covid’s vaccination campaign.
Even with Anvisa’s registration and the technical chamber’s opinion, minister Queiroga, who is pleased to keep Bolsonaro in his post and is considering running for office this year, decided to put the subject up for public consultation.
The Health’s intention is to recommend that children aged 5 to 11 years are vaccinated against Covid-19, provided that through the medical prescription presentation and parental consent.
The Conass (National Council of Health Secretaries) reacted and said that it will not demand the approval of doctors for the vaccination.
At the beginning of the public hearing this Tuesday (4), the secretary of Confronting Covid-19, Rosana de Melo, stated that 99,309 people participated in the consultation. Most were against mandatory medical prescription.
“The majority were in agreement with the non-compulsory nature of vaccination and the prioritization of children with comorbidity. Most were against the obligation of medical prescription in the act of vaccination”, said the secretary.
The government’s idea is to present definitive guidance on the vaccination of children on January 5th.
In an interview with leaf, the president of Anvisa, Antonio Barra Torres, said that the speeches of Bolsonaro encouraged threats to the lives of employees from Anvisa.
he also considered the public consultation and the proposal of Minister Queiroga inadequate to charge a medical prescription to immunize the youngest. “It has no precedent in fighting the pandemic and is inexorably leading to a waste of time,” said Barra Torres.
