The epidemiologist made it clear that the invasion of armed men in a laboratory with samples of infectious viruses poses no threat to global health but only at a local level
The World Health Organization yesterday warned of a “biohazard situation” in Sudan’s capital, describing as spoils of war a laboratory containing pathogenic samples cholera and measles.
The Professor of Hygiene and Epidemiology of the Faculty of Medicine of the EKPA, Gikas Mallorca spoke to ERT and expressed the opinion that there is a risk, as the pathogens (measles and cholera) present in this particular laboratory can cause epidemics.
“From what I have read there are two pathogens listed. One is measles and the other is cholera. Now there definitely is danger, as these pathogens can cause epidemics. In any case, very careful handling is needed,” he said characteristically.
Regarding the possibility of turning these two pathogens into biological weapons, he explained that the process is different from simply using them in laboratories.
“They don’t turn directly into biological weapons. And they themselves could become infected if and when they get into the laboratories and they don’t pay attention,” he emphasized.
Mr. Majorkinis made it clear that there is no risk to global health except at the local level.
“I find it extremely unlikely. The big fear is cholera. Because if the war leads to the destruction of infrastructure, especially water and sanitation, and cholera passes into a community, it’s easy to spread under those conditions,” he said.
Bird flu is closer to humans
The Professor also referred to bird flu: “If there is anything that is attracting our attention at the moment it is bird flu, which seems to be very prevalent in birds all over the world and seems to be a little closer to humans ».
“Scattered infections are reported every year, which to a large extent are also fatal, because bird flu is a much more severe flu than the classic flu and is one of the most dangerous strains we have in terms of flu. At present we do not see adaptation in humans, but that is where the scientific community has turned its attention and will concern us in the coming years. At the moment we don’t see anything immediate, but it is what we consider the most dangerous at the moment,” he noted.
