No new serious cases of influenza were recorded between June 19 and June 25 and no deaths
The new weekly report of the epidemiological surveillance of Respiratory Infections was published today by EODY, in which it is stated that 17 deaths from coronavirus and 27 patients are intubated in the period June 19 to June 25.
At the same time, no new serious cases of influenza were recorded during the same period, nor were there any deaths.
In summary, the EODY report:
Influenza syndromes (regardless of pathogen)
✓ remained at consistently low levels in the community
SARS-CoV2 virus – COVID-19 infection
✓ the positivity in all tested samples showed a small increase compared to the previous week
✓ the number of admissions for COVID-19 (N=211) showed a decrease compared to the previous week and a 50% decrease compared to the average weekly number of new admissions during the previous 4 weeks
✓ the number of new intubations (N=5) remained stable, showing a 38% decrease compared to the average weekly number of new intubations over the previous 4 weeks
✓ the number of patients with COVID-19 infection who are hospitalized with intubation is 27
✓ 17 deaths were recorded with a median age of 84 years (range 74-100 years)
✓ during the last weeks all sequenced strains belonged to the Omicron sub-variants BA.2 and BA.5, with BA.2 predominating from week 9 onwards
✓ at week 22 the most frequent BA.2 sub-variant was XBB.1.5 (84%), followed by XBB.1.16 (14%)
✓ surveillance of viral load in municipal wastewater showed a reduction in SARSCoV-2 virus circulation in 9 out of 10 areas tested
Influenza virus
✓ flu positivity in the community remains below 10% (sentinel)
✓ no new serious case of laboratory-confirmed influenza with hospitalization in ICU was recorded in week 25/2023, nor new death from laboratory-confirmed influenza ✓ from week 40/2022 to week 25/2023, 68 people with influenza were hospitalized in ICU and 26 were recorded deaths
✓ during the same period, 374 samples positive for influenza viruses (sentinel samples and hospital samples) were recorded in the two influenza reference centers, of which 290 (77.5%) were type A strains and 84 (22.5%) were type B strains
✓ of the 288 type A strains subtyped, 258 (90%) were classified to subtype A(H3N2) and 30 (10%) to subtype A(H1N1)pdm09
✓ during the last weeks, a prevalence of the influenza type B virus has been recorded
Respiratory syncytial virus – RSV
✓ all tested samples were negative for RSV
