The governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), started, this Thursday (20), the vaccination of children aged 6 to 17 years with the immunizing agent Coronavac.
The Brigadeiro Faria Lima State School, in Perdizes, west of São Paulo, was where the vaccination took place and the expectation is to immunize one hundred children from the school this Thursday.
The first immunized with Coronavac was a 5th year student and member of the student union called Caetano de Jesus Martins Moreira. At the time of receiving the immunizer, he said he was not afraid. “It’s just a sting,” said the boy.
After monitoring the immunization of 11 children at the college, Doria explained the vaccination schedule in the state. According to the governor, the expectation is that in three weeks the entire age group authorized by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) will be immunized with the first dose against Covid.
In the state, 4 million children must be vaccinated. The expectation is to immunize 250 thousand per day. Pfizer will be released for 5 year olds. Children aged 6 to 11 years will be vaccinated with Coronavac.
From Thursday (20) to January 30, children aged 9 to 11 years without comorbidities and 5 to 11 years old with comorbidities, disabilities, indigenous people and quilombolas will be vaccinated.
From January 31 to February 10, children aged 5 to 8 years without comorbidities will be immunized, as well as children with comorbidities, disabilities, indigenous people and quilombolas who have not yet taken their dose in the previous stage.
“Our goal is to accelerate vaccination to ensure a safe return to school,” said the governor.
The disclosure of the schedule was made shortly after Anvisa released the use of Coronavac in young people from 6 to 17 years old.
The Instituto Butantan’s request, in fact, was to use it in the public from 3 to 17 years old. However, the regulatory agency understood that there is not enough data to vaccinate children aged 3 to 5 years. The evaluation also vetoed the use of the immunizer in immunocompromised children and adolescents.
In addition, Anvisa approved that the dose applied to children is the same as that used in adults, with an interval of 28 days between the two doses.
The government of São Paulo has already reserved 12 million doses of Coronavac for use in children. The advantage of the immunizer is its availability of doses, as it is no longer used by the federal government in the immunization of adults
Before this Thursday, only Pfizer was authorized for small children – Anvisa’s approval was given on December 16, to immunize children aged 5 to 11 years, with an interval of eight weeks between the first and second doses. The product was already approved for those aged 12 and over.
