Opinion – Pedro Hallal: Impunity is the problem

by

Today’s column uses, just as an example, a fact that occurred in recent days: the Ministry of Health published an official document stating that there is scientific evidence in favor of chloroquine against Covid-19 and that there is no scientific evidence in favor of the vaccine. against Covid-19. I emphasize that the case only serves as an example, because in the scientific world, there is no doubt that they are two lies. For this reason, I will not spend column space repeating to readers that chloroquine is of no help against Covid-19 and that the vaccine has already saved millions of lives around the world.

Today’s column is about the reasons these lies were included in the document.

Rivers of public money were used to produce chloroquine. That’s right: the taxes that were collected as a result of your sweat, my sweat, were used to produce a medicine that is useless in the fight against coronavirus. If that same money had been used to distribute masks to the needy population, to buy tests and create a decent testing policy, or to pay more to healthcare professionals who are on the front lines, some of your family and friends who have lost their life for Covid-19 would still be here with us.

The president has been the great leader of the anti-vaccine movement in Brazil, since the first months of the pandemic. It was the president who called vaccines experimental, discriminated against the vaccine produced by Butantan, insinuated that those vaccinated could become alligators, delayed the purchase of vaccines and now took a stand against vaccinating children.

In both cases, the federal government chose the wrong side and lost. A few months into the pandemic, experimental studies have already confirmed that chloroquine is useless in the treatment of Covid-19. Next, hundreds of studies confirmed that vaccines, developed in record time, reduce infections, hospitalizations and deaths.

There was still a less vexing way out for the government. Never talk about chloroquine again and take advantage of the country’s vaccine culture to try to take part of the merits for the success of the vaccination campaign.

But the government decided to double down, keep lying about chloroquine and continue against vaccination.

This only happens because of the certainty of impunity.

In any serious country, the official document published by the Ministry of Health last week would generate at least a dozen layoffs and, after an investigation, a few arrests.

It is because of the certainty that none of this will happen that the Ministry of Health has the courage to publish that table.

It is for the certainty that we, Brazilians and Brazilian taxpayers, are already so used to corruption and crimes committed daily by our representatives, that we will not put the necessary pressure on institutions to do their part.

It is because of the certainty that institutions are either corrupt or tired of investigating crimes and being demoralized by later political decisions.

As long as Brazil does not put those responsible for the macabre experiments with drugs discovered in the Covid-19 CPI in jail…

As long as Brazil does not put in jail the businessmen and politicians who negotiated bribes in the purchase of vaccines and modified the legislation to make corruption viable…

As long as Brazil does not put in jail those who, by denying science, are responsible for thousands of deaths from Covid-19…

We will continue to see bizarre things like that document from the Ministry of Health.

Impunity creates a feeling of invincibility in criminals.
