Skin cancer is the most common cancer in humans
THE skin cancers is o more frequent cancer in humans. It has been estimated that each year we have more cases of skin cancer than new cases of colon, prostate, lung and breast cancer combined.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that in developed countries they are calculated 3 million incidents of skin cancer per year, of which 300,000 are malignant melanomas. All skin cancers are related to ultraviolet radiationwhich has a cumulative effect on fair-skinned people and with a hereditary predisposition over time, mobilizes skin cells to divert and create cancer, according to experts.
The above was mentioned by the president of the Hellenic Dermatology & Venereology Society, presenting the “DERMAIOS” campaign, which takes place throughout May, which was established in 2022 as skin cancer prevention and information month.
Be careful when sunbathing
The president of EDAE emphasized informing the public about the risk of solar exposure, stressing that “multiple sunburns at a young age significantly increase the chance of developing skin cancer at older ages».
The message added by EDAE is for everyone to join him annual preventive check-up with an examination of moles and other lesions by a dermatologist, because skin cancer when diagnosed early will very rarely cause problems.
The EDAE campaign, which takes place throughout May, has the help and support of the Ministry of Health and aims to inform and educate as many citizens as possible about the importance of prevention and in particular the annual visit to the dermatologist to check moles or other signs. Melanoma is one of the most aggressive forms of cancer, but today, if detected early, it can be cured.
