Our nose is the beginning of the respiratory system and its function is to filter, warm, and humidify the air. It has direct communication with the paranasal sinuses, the sinuses, the ethmoid sinuses, the frontal sinuses and the sphenoid.
The nose and sinuses are affected by infections, the most well-known being sinusitis, by allergy, with or without the formation of polyps, and by benign and malignant tumors.
Perineum: causes and symptoms
Sinusitis afflicts more and more people, causing a series of annoying symptoms such as irritability, inability to concentrate, headaches, severe snoring or even apnea. Facial deformities, orthodontic problems, poor performance at school and effects on their development cannot occur in children.
A key driver of sinusitis is the increase in allergic rhinitis, due to changes in lifestyle and diet, as well as air pollution, affecting over 1 million people.
Also, due to the crisis, the poor heating of homes and workplaces has led to an increase in the presence of moisture, which increases the possibility of developing respiratory problems and allergic conditions. The presence of water in the form of water vapor in the environment (normal levels are 40%-50%) is necessary for the proper functioning of the human body. However, if it is too low or above 60%, it facilitates the creation of fungi, which cause allergies.
How do we treat sinusitis?
The treatment of all these diseases can initially be conservative, but surgery may also be needed, which when indicated must be done in time to avoid complications.
The comprehensive endoscopic examination in a patient suffering from rhinitis will reveal if there is a diaphragm, hypertrophy of the sinuses, polyps, foreign bodies in children, large meatus, findings that require surgical treatment because they are predisposing factors for the creation of chronic sinusitis.
Today, the operations are performed without an external incision, with absolute safety, with the help of endoscopic surgery and neuronavigation, ensuring the immediate return of the patient to his activities, as well as a gradual improvement – within a month – of all bothersome symptoms.
Unfortunately, the nose is often not evaluated by patients as an organ with a function, but they only see its aesthetic side.
Practical advice
• Ventilate the house often
• Avoid indoor plants
• Use dehumidifiers
• Calculate the humidity in the house with a hygrometer
• Avoid rugs, curtains, heavy fabrics and woolen dolls
• Adopt a diet rich in fiber and reduce junk food (fast food)
• Do not self-diagnose. The examination by the otorhinolaryngologist will accurately show whether it is sinusitis and will lead to the appropriate treatment.
