- A reduced activity of the virus was recorded, following the increasing trend of the last weeks. The positivity in all tested samples remained stable compared to the previous week.
- 833 new imports were recorded showing a decrease. The average weekly number of new admissions over the previous four weeks was 739, and the number of admissions in the corresponding week in 2023 was 469.
- The number of new intubations was nine. The average weekly number of new intubations over the previous four weeks was 12, and the number of intubations in the corresponding week of 2023 was eight.
- The number of intubated patients with COVID-19 infection is 25.
- The number of deaths was 40. The average weekly number of deaths in the previous four weeks was 34 and the number of deaths in the corresponding week in 2023 was 27.
- An increasing trend of BA.2.86 carrying at least one of the F456L and R346T mutations continues to be recorded, with
- its dominance in recent weeks. It is noted that this category of variant strains has not been associated with an increased risk of severe disease.
- Viral load surveillance in municipal wastewater showed an increase in SARS-CoV-2 virus circulation in six of the ten areas tested.
- Vulnerable population groups (elderly and people with underlying diseases) are advised to scrupulously follow preventive measures against respiratory infections and to seek medical advice in time for symptoms, in order to provide timely treatment. At the same time, it is recommended to the general population, in the presence of respiratory infection symptoms, to limit contacts with people belonging to vulnerable groups.
Influenza virus
- Influenza positivity in the community is low (PHC Sentinel surveillance network), while no positive samples were found in hospitals (SARI surveillance network).
- No new serious case with ICU hospitalization was recorded, nor was there a new death from laboratory-confirmed influenza.
- From week 40/2023 to week 31/2024, 149 people with laboratory-confirmed influenza were hospitalized in ICU and 71 deaths from laboratory-confirmed influenza were recorded.
- From week 40/2023 to week 31/2024, 1,064 influenza strains have been typed (derived from community sentinel samples, from SARI surveillance samples and from hospital samples outside surveillance networks), of which 557 (52%) were type A and 507 (48%) type B. From week 10 onwards there is a prevalence of type B, both in the community (PHC Sentinel surveillance network) and in hospitals (SARI surveillance network).
- In total, 539 A-type strains have been subtyped in the two Influenza Reference Centers. 494 (92%) belonged to the A(H1)pdm09 subtype and 45 (8%) to the A(H3) subtype.
