The first liver transplant of a reduced size in Greece was announced by the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, in a post.

As pointed out by Mr. Georgiadis, the transplant took place on Wednesday at the People’s Hospital, and the recipient was a 22-year-old patient from Thessaly who suffered from a rare metabolic disease.

The post of Adonis Georgiadis

“Reduced-size liver transplantation was performed on 30.10.2024 at the People’s Hospital, for the first time in Greece, in an adult patient by the team of Professor of Surgery and Transplantation Mr. George Sotiropoulos. The recipient was a 22-year-old patient from Thessaly who suffered from a rare metabolic disease. Due to his particular somatometric data, this particular patient had been evaluated for a liver transplant from a living donor, according to the protocol of the People’s Hospital, with his mother as a candidate donor, but she was not considered suitable at the last stage of the process. Reduced-size liver transplantation is a procedure in which a hepatectomy is performed ex situ on the transplant preparation table, on ice, the extent of which is adjusted to the somatometric needs of the prospective recipient. The performance of partial liver transplants in Greece, either in the form of liver transplantation from a living donor, or in the form of a reduced size liver transplant, expands the possibilities of liver transplantation in our country, provides a solution to the health problem of a portion of patients and prepares the ground for the restarting a pediatric liver transplant program in our country”.
