Drinking sugary drinks is worse for your health than any other form of sugar, Swedish research reveals
The consumption sugary drinks significantly increases the risk of serious cardiovascular disease, but limited consumption of sweets does not, finds a large study published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health.
The researchers they studied evidence for almost 70,000 people from two large cohorts in Sweden, in which participants filled out questionnaires about their diet in 1997 and 2009. In the study, they looked at sugar consumption from sweetness and sugary drinksas well as seven cardiovascular diseases: two types of stroke, heart attacks, heart failure, aortic aneurysms, atrial fibrillation and aortic stenosis. Participants were followed until they died, were diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, or reached the end of the follow-up period in 2019.
They found that consumption of sugary drinks was worse for health than any other form of sugar and significantly increased the risk of ischemic stroke, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and abdominal aortic aneurysm. It was also found that the highest risks of a negative health outcome occurred in the lowest sweet treat intake category. So it appears that occasional consumption of treats is associated with better outcomes.
However, the scientists note that more research will be needed to understand the mechanisms involved in the different effects of the different types. sugar consumption.
